3DR Solo Review

Overview

3DR Solo is a very popular mid-tier quadcopter with some serious value for money. The drone has been discontinued by 3DR which means you cannot expect any support from their customer service. However! The trade-off is that you get a quadcopter that is worth a LOT more than the 70-80$ you will have to give for it. This can be an issue for first-time quadcopter buyers, but if you have some basic knowledge of the trade, then this might just be the best purchase you’ll ever make.

The 3DR Solo is likely one of the best drones we have ever tested for video recording and live-streaming. It can even fly itself to make it easier for you to capture some beautiful images or record the landscape. It runs on two 1GHz computers, one on the drone and one on the remote, connected through a very reliable Wifi signal.

PROS:
  • Quality for money is simply outstanding.
  • Easy to use remote, with a strong Wifi signal between drone and controller.
  • Great for recording or capturing images with a GoPro.
  • One of the best performing drones in the 100$ price class
CONS:
  • Disowned by 3DR(very limited customer support).
  • Gimbal and GoPro are sold seperately.

Features & Specifications

The 3DR has several great features but one of the most noteworthy might be the integrated smart shot mode. This allows the quadcopter to fly itself, while you can put all your focus on getting some great shots of the scenery. The mode is highly functional and has certainly helped me get some great pictures, more than once.

It also has top-notch live-streaming capabilities which are not always something you can expect from a quadcopter of this price class. Once it is set up you have HD streaming directly from your GoPro to your phone. This truly makes flying the 3DR a real joy. It also includes a full-featured app for iOS and Android with some great quality of life features. However, the app is not at all necessary to enjoy the 3DR Solo.

What Buyers Are Saying

Man holding a checklist

The 3DR easily outperform some of my more expensive drones but the legs can feel a little unstable at times.

It has a nice solid feeling to it and looks damn good. The LED lighting also makes it very easy to spot, especially when flying at night.

Definitely one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. The only drawback for me is that the legs feel a little unstable, which is a shame since the rest of the aircraft is built really nicely.

The Remote is very intuitional and should be easy to use even for complete beginners.

Rating & Conclusion

If you are looking for a great aircraft for shooting videos and pictures in HD, then this is probably the very best you’ll find below 100$. It is a great choice for novices and pros alike. The remote is easy to use and the drone is very affordable, which makes it a great choice for beginners. On top of that, it has some serious power that caters to even the most seasoned quadcopter enthusiasts.

If you can look past the disowning of 3DR, this is one a purchase you will likely never regret. We would recommend buying it through Amazon, or other shops with a great return policy, as that serves as a great replacement for the lack of customer service.
