The DJI Phantom 3 may be a little pricey but it’s performance, quality, and the array of features easily make it worth it. It would be quicker to list the things this quadcopter aren’t able to do than to go through the list of features. With an incredible 12 megapixel camera that can shoot up to 2.7k HD videos, this is easily one of the best drones we have ever tried for shooting video and photos.
With a ton of features and options, it can feel overwhelming to a beginner. That being said, it is incredibly easy to control and set up, so if your budget allows it, it can even be a great choice for a newbie. However, we feel the DJI Phantom 3 mainly caters to seasoned drone enthusiasts. Seeing as they will get the most out of all the additional gimmicks, and that is really what this aircraft is all about.
The additional features grant opportunities and freedom that most drones on the market will have a hard time matching.
So if you are looking for the best camera and video recording drone on the market, DJI Phantom 3 Standard is definitely up there.
- Superb video and picture quality
- Ready for use right out of the box
- An incredible amount of useful recording features
- Over half a mile radius
- Great for pros and beginners alike.
Specifications & Features – What you need to know about the DJI Phantom 3 Standard
This is really the bread and butter of the Phantom 3 and should be a defining factor if you consider buying this powerful drone.
Live video feed: Connect your phone and enjoy the 720p live video footage. It is as easy to set up as it sounds, works splendidly and has a very strong connection via wifi.
Over half a mile radius: Usually, manufacturers have a tendency to exaggerate the maximum radius on drones. However, we did test it to a little over half a mile and had no real issues during our flights. We did experience 2 or 3 milliseconds of stutter during the 25 minutes flight but only when at maximum range.
Return to home: You can set a prefixed point to home. This means that with a simple push of a button, your drone will return safely to your set point. If you don’t have previous experience with drones, you won’t realize just how awesome and convenient this feature is.
Follow me mode: The Phantom is able to recognize a specific person or sometimes object and follow that steadily. Giving opportunity for some great shots of recordings of you skating, surfing or something else entirely. It is so nice not having to control the drone at all times and still get the best possible recording. We did experience once that it lost track of us but you get an instant notification if it happens.
Point of interest: This mode allows the quadcopter to focus on a prefixed point and hover in perfect circles around that point. Much like the ‘follow me” feature, this can be used to capture high-quality recordings of your activities, as long as you don’t move too far out of the point of interest.
Waypoints: Choose a specific route on your phone’s map application and the Phantom will correctly follow that given path.

Likely the best drone on the market for under 500$ in 2017
This is the best drone we have ever tested for video and picture shooting for under 500$ we have ever tried. Not only is the quality of picture insanely high, it also has a TON of features that make shooting video a real joy and also allow you to take better and more sturdy pictures than usual.
The price may not be too budget friendly but you honestly get more than your money worth. Even though I generally wouldn’t recommend high-end quadcopters to beginners, this drone has such smooth controls that it can make a great entry-level aircraft. While also having the performance and specifications to fit the needs of a real pro.
I would highly recommend this if you are on the market for an all-around awesome drone and if you love capturing awesome footage or taking beautiful pictures. If you are just looking to fly around for fun whilst looking at the live footage you might as well save your money and go for a cheaper model. This is a vehicle for those who look to take full advantage of the possibilities granted by a UAV.
